WHY: Members and Officers of the Jim Taylor Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8845, will host a grand re-opening event and celebration after the Members of the Post voted to eliminate smoking on the premises. The Post will undergo extensive cleaning prior to the re-opening.
There is a long history of smoking and other tobacco use in the military. Many Veterans used tobacco while they served, particularly during deployment. Use of tobacco carries various health risks. Women who use tobacco, for example, face an 18 times greater risk of dying from lung cancer, compared with women who do not smoke. Smoking in public places exposes others to secondhand smoke, which can cause them health problems.
Secondhand smoke is responsible for more than 40,000 deaths annually in the United States. Inhaling even a little can be dangerous, affects babies before and after they are born, causes cancer in adults and is known to increase the risk of heart disease in those who do not smoke.
Our Post is committed to respecting the health of our Veterans, their families, the supporters of the Post and the patrons of the establishment.
