University of Arkansas - Fort Smith issued the following announcement Sept. 29.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we've collected stories from some of our amazing students about what their Hispanic or Latino/a/x heritage means to them.
First up is Matthew Bonilla, a sophomore from Fort Smith, Arkansas, who is a member of UAFS Kappa Sigma - Omicron Tau chapter, IFC, Men of Excellence through UAFS Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and UAFS - University Student Ambassadors
To Matthew, Hispanic heritage means treasuring the culture and values inherited from his parents and taking pride in being able to pass them on to his future children so that they never forget their heritage, especially as a first-generation American.
Matthew also shared that he is passionate about his work with his fraternity. “Being a part of Kappa Sigma and seeing first hand what a true brotherhood means has really helped me throughout my college experience,” Matthew said. “Having the bond I have with my fraternity brothers has helped me be passionate about representing Kappa Sigma in everything I do.”
While growing up, Matthew said his mother influenced him the most. “She has shown me through hard work and determination, anything is possible. She has also been my motivation for me to take advantage of any opportunity that I’m given.”
“The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far in my life is that sometimes you have to go through the bad to see the good. Learning patience as times are rough is what will help you in the long run.”
