Fort Smith Public Schools (FSPS), Rotary Club of Fort Smith, the Community Rescue Mission, and the Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) organization
join forces on a handcrafted, bed construction project. According to SHP, 3% of children nationwide, between the ages of 3 and 17 years of age, do not have a bed in which to sleep.
On Friday, October 28, 2022, from 10 a.m. until Noon, 25 students from Northside High School’s construction class will put their construction knowledge and skills to work in an effort to build
beds for needy children. The construction project will take place at the First Christian Church parking lot at 3501 Rogers Avenue, Fort Smith, AR. Once constructed, the SHP organization will deliver 30 new beds, mattresses, and bedding to area homes.
Fort Smith Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Terry Morawski said, “This project gives our
students a chance to serve their community while enhancing their skill set.”
Fort Smith Rotary Club volunteer member Ken Colley said “No kid should sleep on the floor in our town. Studies have shown that if a child has a good night’s sleep, they will be much more apt to stay alert in the classroom and be able to focus and remember what they learn. Our organization is very excited to have the opportunity to help and provide the necessary support to these children in need.”
