As a first-generation college student, Ava Word wasn’t sure which major field of study best suited her interest in helping children.

She considered options such as pediatric medicine and occupational therapy.

Then she took the Orientation to Teaching class at Benton High School.

“I just knew that was what I had to do,” said Ava.

This fall, she will be a freshman elementary education major at Arkansas Tech University.

“I really like the campus,” said Ava when asked why she chose ATU. “Everyone is nice here. I like that it is small, but not too small. I wanted to start over and make new friends. I’m excited to get out there more. In college, you become a different person. I don’t want to change myself, but I want to grow.”

Ava plans on joining a sorority and she is considering participation in the ATU choral music program.

“The main thing I’m nervous about is not being at home,” said Ava. “I’m a homebody and a mama’s girl, but I’ve got a great roommate. I’m more excited than nervous. Getting out there is really important. I’ve made efforts to come here, talk to different people and make connections. I think that’s really important. You just can’t be nervous about it. You just have to do it, and I think this is a good place to do it.”
